What Files Are Included in a Static Website Template?

Learn how to inspect HTML and framework template packages, including source files, assets, build output, documentation and notices.

A static website template commonly includes page source, stylesheets, scripts, assets and documentation. A framework package may also contain components, content files, a dependency manifest and build configuration. The exact contents vary, so inspect the product’s file list before assuming that a demo feature or photograph is included.

The most important distinction is between editable source and generated output. Both can be useful, but they serve different purposes. Source supports future development; output is the version prepared for hosting.

Files in a plain HTML package

A basic HTML template may include an index.html homepage, additional HTML pages and folders for CSS, JavaScript and images. Names and folder structures differ between products.

HTML describes page content and structure. CSS controls presentation, such as typography and spacing. JavaScript supplies behaviour such as opening a menu or filtering visible cards. Images, icons and fonts support the visual design.

Before editing, identify which stylesheet and script files are loaded by a representative page. Some packages include vendor libraries, alternative designs or source maps that are not all needed in the published version. Follow the package documentation instead of deleting unfamiliar files at random.

Files in a framework package

An Astro template usually includes a package.json file describing scripts and dependencies, source directories and configuration. Components, layouts and content may be stored separately.

The package manager installs the dependencies needed to run or build the project. A lockfile records a resolved dependency arrangement and should normally be kept with the project. Do not assume that an absent node_modules folder means the package is incomplete; dependencies are commonly installed during setup.

Astro’s project structure documentation explains its conventions. Check the template’s own instructions and framework version because a package can customise those conventions.

Source and output are different deliverables

A generator can combine many components and content files into finished HTML pages. The resulting output may be enough to serve the public site, but it does not necessarily preserve the original editing structure.

For example, a shared header component might become repeated HTML in dozens of generated pages. Editing each generated copy would undermine the benefit of the source system, and a later rebuild could overwrite those edits.

Keep source changes in the project and regenerate the output through the documented workflow. The static template overview explains how this publication model differs from editing a finished page directly.

Documentation that should be easy to find

Look for a README or documentation directory explaining setup, editing and publication. Useful instructions identify the required tools, commands and files involved in common changes.

A first-time maintainer should be able to answer these questions:

  • Where are the site name, logo and contact details configured?
  • How are navigation items and new pages added?
  • Which images are safe to replace, and what sizes work well?
  • How is the site previewed and built?
  • Which folder is uploaded to hosting?
  • What external services still need configuration?

Missing instructions do not always make a package unusable, but they increase the knowledge or support required. Include that additional work in the buying decision.

Photographs, fonts and icons need separate checks

The presence of an asset in a live demo does not prove it is included in the download or licensed for your project. Product documentation may use placeholder media, preview-only photography or assets with separate notices.

Check the asset list and rights information. Record the source and permitted use of replacement photographs. If a webfont is included, confirm the applicable licence and whether it covers your intended deployment.

A design source file is another separate item. An HTML package does not automatically include Figma files, layered illustrations or editable originals of every graphic. Ask for those explicitly if they matter to the project.

Configuration is not a service subscription

A template can include example environment variables or configuration fields for forms, analytics and payment services. These examples do not create accounts or activate integrations.

Keep secrets out of public files. A setting intended for browser use should never be treated as a safe place for private credentials. Follow the connected service’s documentation when deciding how credentials are stored.

Also check whether the package includes a working form endpoint or only its interface. A successful local build does not confirm that messages will reach your business inbox.

Inspect the package before customisation

Make a clean backup and read the file inventory. Run the documented setup without changing content first, if the package requires a build. This establishes whether the original package works in your environment.

Then make one representative edit, preview it and build again. Avoid changing dependencies, folder names and page content simultaneously, because that makes errors harder to diagnose.

For a multipage project, review how static templates support multiple pages before duplicating files. The best way to add pages depends on whether common structures are shared or copied.

Compare a real product record

The ProofCase listing provides a catalogue example to inspect for requirements and included files. Compare its current record with the tasks your site needs; do not assume that every product uses the same folders or libraries.

A satisfactory package makes the path from source to a working website understandable. Confirm the essential files, required tools, asset permissions and publication steps before treating the download as complete.
